A stalled loader, grader, or haul truck is expensive before the first repair bill arrives. When a tire is damaged beyond repair, the real challenge is often finding the exact replacement fast enough, in a condition and price range that makes sense. Knowing how to source OTR tires starts with treating the tire as an equipment component, not a generic commodity. Size, construction, tread, load capacity, rim fitment, condition, and delivery all need to line up.

OTR, or off-the-road, tires cover a wide range of heavy-duty applications: loaders, articulated dump trucks, scrapers, graders, cranes, port equipment, underground machines, and industrial vehicles. A tire that looks close on paper can still be wrong for the job. Get the specifications first, then compare inventory.

Start With the Tire Markings and Equipment Requirements

The sidewall is the fastest place to begin. Record the complete tire size exactly as shown, including any letters, radial or bias designation, load index, ply rating, and star rating. A size such as 20.5R25 is not interchangeable with every tire that happens to fit a 25-inch rim. Section width, aspect ratio, construction, and approved rim width matter.

Also record the machine make, model, axle position, application, and original tire specification. A wheel loader working in a quarry needs a different tire than a loader moving loose material in a yard. A motor grader may require traction and flotation characteristics that do not suit a high-speed haul application.

Before contacting a supplier or bidding on an auction lot, have these details ready:

  • Complete tire size and current tire brand or model
  • Rim diameter and, when available, rim width and wheel part number
  • Radial or bias-ply construction requirement
  • Required load capacity, ply rating, or star rating
  • Tread type needed for the operating surface
  • Quantity required and whether matching pairs or sets are necessary
  • Delivery location, unloading capability, and required timeline

This information prevents wasted calls and prevents buying a tire that physically mounts but fails to perform. It also gives a supplier enough detail to identify alternatives when the exact model is unavailable.

How to Source OTR Tires by Application

The job site should drive the purchase. OTR tread codes and patterns are built around specific duty cycles, surfaces, and heat conditions. Buying the deepest, most aggressive tread is not automatically the right answer.

For loaders, L-2, L-3, L-4, and L-5 categories are common. L-3 tires are general-purpose rock and earthmover tires suited to many loader and industrial applications. L-4 provides a deeper tread for higher cut resistance, while L-5 is deeper again for severe rock conditions and demanding environments. The trade-off is heat. Deeper tread can retain more heat, which may make it a poor fit for long-distance, higher-speed operation.

For graders, G-series tires are common. They are designed for traction, stability, and wear in grading work. Earthmoving and haul applications often use E-series tires, where heat resistance, load, distance, and speed need close attention. Underground, demolition, scrap, and port work can call for specialty compounds and tread designs built to resist cuts, punctures, or concentrated load damage.

Ask a direct question before buying: what is causing the current tire to come out of service? If the answer is sidewall cuts, a different tread depth alone may not solve the problem. If the answer is heat buildup, a heavier tire may worsen it. If wear is concentrated in the center or shoulder, look at inflation, load distribution, alignment, road maintenance, and operator practices along with the replacement tire.

Decide Between New, Surplus, and Used Inventory

There is no single best condition category. The right choice depends on machine value, operating hours, downtime exposure, and the cost of taking a tire out of service early.

New tires provide current production, full tread depth, and the clearest manufacturer specifications. They are generally the straightforward choice for high-utilization equipment, demanding production work, or situations where tire failure would stop a critical operation.

New old stock, often called NOS, can offer a strong value when it has been stored properly. It may be older inventory that was never mounted, sometimes from military, industrial, or liquidation channels. Age should be evaluated carefully. Ask how the tire was stored, inspect for weather checking, and confirm that its construction and size remain suitable for the equipment. A properly stored tire is different from one that spent years exposed to sun, moisture, and extreme temperature swings.

Used OTR tires can make sense for low-hour machines, seasonal equipment, temporary replacements, resale equipment, or buyers working within a hard budget. The purchase should be based on remaining tread, casing condition, repair history, and application. A used tire with usable tread but deep sidewall damage is rarely a bargain. For a matched axle, aim for similar brand, model, tread depth, and overall diameter whenever possible.

Surplus inventory is worth checking when common retail channels cannot find a size, when an older machine needs a discontinued fitment, or when a buyer needs several tires at a more competitive cost. Inspect Condition Before You Commit

For used tires, confirm remaining tread depth and where it was measured. Look for uneven wear, exposed cords, deep cuts, cracking around lugs, bead damage, chunking, and sidewall repairs. A repair in the tread area may be acceptable for some applications when completed professionally, but sidewall damage deserves much more caution because that area flexes under load.

Check the DOT date code when available. The date alone does not determine whether an OTR tire is usable, especially for stored inventory, but it is part of the decision. Storage history, visible condition, and intended duty matter more than a single number. Be wary of inventory described only as “good” or “serviceable” without measurements, photos, or a defined condition grade.

If you are buying mounted wheel assemblies, verify the wheel dimensions, bolt pattern, offset, center bore, and valve configuration. A complete tire and wheel package can reduce installation time, but only if it fits the machine without clearance or load issues.

Price the Full Landed Cost, Not Just the Tire

OTR tires are large, heavy, and expensive to move. A low unit price can disappear once freight, border paperwork, handling, loading equipment, taxes, and delivery access are added. Get a freight quote early, especially for large radial tires, wheel assemblies, or multi-tire orders.

Confirm whether the shipment is going to a commercial address with a dock, forklift, or loader available. Residential delivery and remote jobsites can add cost or create delivery problems. Ask about packaging, whether tires will ship loose or secured, and whether the carrier can handle the delivery location.

For cross-border purchases between the United States and Canada, confirm the final shipping terms before buying. Know which party handles customs documentation, duties where applicable, brokerage, and destination charges. This is especially relevant for surplus and auction inventory, where the selling price may be attractive but the buyer still needs a workable transportation plan.

Use Auctions Carefully When Timing Matters

No-reserve and liquidation auctions can be a practical sourcing channel for buyers who understand fitment and can move quickly. They can also be a poor choice when a machine is down and you need a guaranteed replacement by a certain date. Inventory is usually sold as listed, quantities may be limited, and matching sets can disappear fast.

Set a maximum bid based on the full landed cost and expected remaining service life. Read the listing for tire condition, location, quantity, wheel inclusion, and pickup terms. If a lot contains mixed brands, mixed tread depths, or unmatched tires, price it accordingly. A cheap lot is not a good buy if it leaves you with one usable tire and three that cannot run together.

Build a Repeatable Sourcing File

The easiest OTR tire purchase is the second one, provided you keep records. Maintain a simple file for each machine with tire size, approved alternates, preferred tread pattern, rim details, purchase dates, operating hours, pressure targets, and reasons for removal. Include photos of sidewall markings and wheel assemblies.

This record lets you source replacements before a tire becomes an emergency. It also makes it easier to compare quotes accurately, buy surplus inventory when it appears, and standardize tires across a fleet where practical. If several machines use the same size, buying in pairs or sets may improve both availability and pricing.

The right OTR tire is the one that fits the wheel, carries the load, survives the surface, and arrives before downtime becomes the most expensive line item. Get the specifications in hand, verify condition without assumptions, and price freight as seriously as the tire itself.
